Plumbing Maintenance
Regular and thoughtful maintenance on your plumbing will save you money in the long run. The old saying of “a stitch in time saves nine” holds true here, and catching a small leak or blockage early can mean saving on fixing a large problem later on.
Plumbing terminology
Before you begin organising any plumbing maintenance, there are some plumbing terms to know that will make this task a little bit easier, especially when communicating to your plumber about work needing to be done. Here’s a few to get you started:
Water pressure
Shut-off valve
Drainpipe
Auger
Flapper
These are some important parts of your plumbing system that help keep it functioning as it should, and knowing about them can help you diagnose your issue. You may have to research more depending on your problem, but at the very least you will have some background knowledge to help you get started.
Jobs best left to the plumber
There are generally some items of concern that if found when doing maintenance checks, are best left to a reputable plumber, and may or may not fall part of any emergency plumbing that needs immediate attention.
These may include:
Low (or no) water pressure
Sewer line problems
Main line problems
No hot water
It goes without saying that if you are experiencing any issues with the above listed items, call a plumber right away.
Use a checklist
Next, you may want to create a checklist of the remaining items that need attention as part of preventative plumbing maintenance. - and you can do this annually, or more often depending on your needs, the state of your plumbing systems, the size of your property, or if the property is residential or commercial. Situations will differ, but the main idea is that a list will help you cover all areas and also keep track of items that need attention - smoothing out communication between you and the plumber.
Check for:
Leaking taps
Running toilets
Dripping shower heads
Unusually slow drainage speeds at sinks and basins
Recurring flushing issues at toilets (overflowing or blockages)
Water hammer sounds, or water resonance (what’s the difference?)
Any other leaks
We cannot iterate enough the importance of plumbing maintenance yet this is often overlooked and small plumbing issues can turn into emergency plumbing problems when not addressed and fixed.
